อัลกุรอาน (อาหรับ: الْقُرآن) มาจากรากศัพท์ในภาษาอาหรับแปลว่า การอ่าน หรือ การรวบรวม
อัลลอฮ์ได้ประทานคัมภีร์อัลกรุอานแก่นบีมุฮัมมัดซึ่งชาวมุสลิมถือว่าเป็นนบีคนสุดท้าย และคัมภีร์นี้ก็เป็นคัมภีร์สุดท้ายที่พระเป็นเจ้าได้ส่งมาให้แก่มวลมนุษยชาติ หลังจากนี้แล้วจะไม่มีคัมภีร์ใด ๆ จากพระเป็นเจ้าอีก คัมภีร์กรุอานนี้ได้ประทานมาเพื่อยกเลิกคัมภีร์เก่า ๆ ที่เคยได้ทรงประทานมาในอดีตนั่นคือคัมภีร์เตารอต (Torah) ที่เคยทรงประทานมาแก่นบีมูซา คัมภีร์ซะบูร (Psalm) ที่เคยทรงประทานมาแก่นบีดาวูด (David) และคัมภีร์อินญีล (Evangelium / Gospel) ที่เคยทรงประทานมาแก่นบีอีซา (Jesus) เป็นคัมภีร์ที่บริบูรณ์ไม่มีการเพี้ยนเปลี่ยนแปลง ภาษาของอัลกุรอานนั้นคือภาษาอาหรับ ซึ่งเป็นภาษาของนบีมุฮัมมัด
การศรัทธาในคัมภีร์อัลกุรอานทั้งเล่มเป็นหลักการหนึ่งที่มุสลิมทุกคนต้องศรัทธา นั่นก็หมายความว่าหากไม่ศรัทธาในอัลกุรอาน หรือศรัทธาเพียงบางส่วนก็จะเป็นมุสลิมไม่ได้ เช่นเดียวกับที่ต้องศรัทธาว่าคัมภีร์อัลกุรอานที่มีอยู่ในปัจจุบันนี้มีความบริบูรณ์ภายใต้การพิทักษ์ของอัลลอฮ์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า ด้วยเหตุนี้จึงไม่มีการสังคายนาอัลกุรอานเลย[ต้องการอ้างอิง] ตั้งแต่วันที่ท่านนบีเสียชีวิตจนกระทั่งถึงปัจจุบัน ด้วยพระประสงค์ของอัลลอฮฺภาษาอาหรับจึงเป็นภาษาโบราณภาษาเดียว ที่มีชีวิตอยู่จนกระทั่งวันนี้ได้ และได้กลายเป็นภาษามาตรฐานของประเทศอาหรับทั้งหลาย เป็นภาษาวิชาการของอิสลาม และเป็นภาษาที่ใช้ในการปฏิบัติศาสนพิธีของมุสลิมทุกคนทั่วโลก
การประทานคัมภีร์
ในราวปี ค.ศ.610 เมื่อมุฮัมมัดนั่งบำเพ็ญตนอยู่ในถ้ำบนยอดเขาฮิรออ์อย่างที่เคยทำเป็นประจำ ญิบรีลทูตแห่งอัลลอฮ์ก็ปรากฏตนขึ้น และนำพระโองการจากพระผู้เป็นเจ้ามีความว่า
"จงอ่านเถิด ด้วยพระนามแห่งผู้อภิบาลของเธอ ผู้ทรงบังเกิด ทรงบังเกิดมนุษย์จากก้อนเลือด จงอ่านเถิด และพระเจ้าของเธอนั้นผู้ทรงใจบุญยิ่ง ผู้ทรงสอนการใช้ปากกา ผู้ทรงสอนมนุษย์ในสิ่งที่เขาไม่รู้ ..." (บทอัลอะลัก)
ตั้งแต่นั้นมามุฮัมมัดก็ได้กลายเป็นศาสนทูตของอัลลอฮ์ ที่ต้องรับหน้าที่ประกาศศาสนาของอัลลอฮฺ นั่นคือศาสนาอิสลาม ที่ตั้งอยู่บนหลักการไม่บูชาสิ่งอื่นใดนอกจากอัลลอฮ์ การวิวรณ์ การรับสาส์น หรือโองการจากอัลลอฮฺนั้นเรียกในภาษาอาหรับว่า วะฮีย์ ศาสดามุฮัมมัดได้รับวะฮีย์เป็นคราวๆทะยอยลงมาเรื่อยๆ จากวะฮีย์แรกถึงวะฮีย์สุดท้ายใช้เวลา 23 ปี ทุกครั้งที่วะฮีย์ลงมา ท่านศาสนทูตจะประกาศให้สาวกของท่านทราบ เพื่อจะได้ไปประกาศให้คนอื่นทราบอีกต่อไป สาวกจะพยายามท่องจำวะฮีย์ที่ลงมานั้นจนขึ้นใจ และท่านศาสดาจะสั่งให้อาลักษณ์ของท่านบันทึกลงในสมุดที่ทำด้วยหนังสัตว์ กระดูก หรือสิ่งอื่นๆที่สามารถเก็บรักษาไว้ได้
ชาวอาหรับสมัยนั้นเก่งกาจในเชิงกวีนิพนธ์ มีกวีลือนามปรากฏอยู่ทุกเผ่า ที่กะอ์บะฮ์นั้นก็มีบทกวีที่แต่งโดยเจ็ดยอดกวีอาหรับ เขียนด้วยน้ำทองคำแขวนอยู่ ในงานแสดงสินค้าประจำปีที่ อุกาซ ในอาราเบีย ที่จัดให้อาหรับทุกเผ่าพันธุ์มาพบปะแลกเปลี่ยนสินค้าและวัฒนธรรม ก็จะมีกิจกรรมที่สำคัญที่สุดร่วมอยู่ด้วยนั่นคือการประชันบทกวี
